Introducing The Missing Bitcoin: a $150,000 Scavenger Hunt

Today we're launching The Missing Bitcoin, a free scavenger hunt across the portal worlds of Remix. The first player to find 60 coins wins 1 bitcoin. Nine more players win cash, and if a friend you invited becomes Champion, you win half a bitcoin. There is $150,000 in prizes, nothing to buy, and the first worlds are open now. Start the hunt here.

Why a hunt

When we opened portal worlds last month, the hardest thing to explain was the feeling of walking through one. You see the next world through the portal, step in, and you're there. A trailer can't show it. You have to play it.

So we built a reason to explore. A hunt gives every corner of every world a point. That ledge you'd normally skip might hold a coin. That sign you'd walk past might be a clue.

There is a second reason. Every world in the hunt was built with the same tools any creator gets in Remix Desktop: the same portals, characters, menus and saves. While you hunt, you're seeing what you could make yourself.

The story

The Keeper was laying a spell on a bitcoin so no thief could ever steal it. Something went wrong. The bitcoin burst into pieces, and the pieces scattered across the worlds of Remix. Each piece is a coin. Find enough of them and the Keeper can put the bitcoin back together, and it's yours.

How it works

• Coins are hidden in portal worlds. Some sit behind puzzles and riddles. Others wait at the end of a climb, a time trial, a hazard run or a hidden-object search.
• Every coin counts toward one total. Your count follows you from world to world and from your computer to your phone.
• Worlds open on a schedule. Some ask you to hold a number of coins before you can enter.
• First to 60 wins. The first player to collect 60 coins is the Champion.

The worlds open today

The Missing Bitcoin is where the hunt starts: an island lagoon under a wave that froze in place. Look everywhere. Not every coin is out in the open.

The Keeper's Study is behind a carved oak door: a lamplit room of maps, old keys and a fire that never goes out. Sit with the Keeper to learn when each portal opens. The Hunters' Roll by his chair shows the top ten hunters, so you can see who is close.

Chapter 2 starts Monday, November 2 at 2 PM Eastern with Magma Abyss. After that, a new world opens every two or three days: Moon Jumper, VectorShift, Dust Veil and one more whose name stays secret until it opens. Each asks for more coins than the last. Before you're done you'll aim light across mirrors, ride a sandworm and track down a lava tube on the moon. The hunt page keeps the live schedule and counts down to each opening.

The prizes

• Champion: 1 bitcoin, worth up to $100,000, for the first player to collect 60 coins.
• 2nd through 10th: nine prizes. $7,500 for 2nd, $5,000 for 3rd and $1,000 each for 4th through 10th.
• Referral Bonus: ½ bitcoin, worth up to $50,000, if a friend joins Remix from your invite and becomes Champion.

The hunt is free to play and no purchase is necessary. The Official Rules cover who can enter, how 2nd through 10th are decided and when the hunt ends. We'll name the winners on X.

Where to play

You can hunt anywhere Remix runs, and your coins come with you.

• Remix Desktop for Windows, Mac and Linux plays every world at full size with a keyboard and mouse or a controller. It's the best seat for the hunt.
• remix.gg plays the same worlds in any computer browser.
• Your phone. The Remix app on iOS and Android and your phone's browser play with touch controls. Some trails run through the app.

An Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Pro controller works on Remix Desktop and remix.gg. Pair it over Bluetooth or plug it in, then press any button.

Hunt with friends

Portal worlds are better with people in them. Play Together shows which friends are in a world right now and drops you in beside them. Two people searching a world find more than one.

Inviting a friend also gives you a second way to win. Send your invite from the hunt page. If your friend joins Remix from it and becomes Champion, you win the Referral Bonus.

Day one

The first world passed 3,000 plays within hours of opening. My brother Charlie, our CEO, said it best in today's announcement: "We wanted to change who gets to make games." The hunt is a tour of what that looks like when creators get real tools.
